Bangladesh Chhatra League has decided to remove 19 members from its central committee.
BCL central committee general secretary Golam Rabbani said that they decided to remove some leaders, who were accused in cases, involved in drug abuse, over-aged, and connected with anti-organisational activities.
Earlier on May 15, Chhatra League revealed a list of 16 ‘controversial leaders’, who were awarded different posts in the committee.
Golam Rabbani further said that out of the 16, eight suspects proved their innocence so they would not be punished, but eleven more were found controversial in the committee and they would be removed.
He further said that full-fledged committee of Dhaka University branch and Dhaka Metropolitan north and south committees would be announced soon.
Meanwhile, Chhatra League leaders who failed to make room or didn’t get expected post in the recently announced central committee continued their sit-in at the base of Anti-Hooliganism Raju Memorial of Dhaka University on Tuesday for the second consecutive day.
Deprived leaders’ spokesperson Rakib Hossain said that they would continue their protest unit controversial figures were removed and renewal of the committee.
He also said that no BCL leaders had contacted with them though 40 hours had elapsed.
The deprived leaders alleged that the new committee had many leaders with criminal records also non-students, drug addicts, drug dealers, married people and disputed individuals made their place in the committee.
Earlier, PM Sheikh Hasina ordered Chhatra League leaders to drop controversial leaders from its central committee.
Prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina approved the central committee on May 13 about eleven months after Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani were made president and general secretary respectively in the 29th council session of the organisation.
A release, signed by Rezwanul Haque and Golam Rabbani, was circulated in the late afternoon confirming the new committee that featured 61 vice-presidents, 11 joint secretaries, 11 organising secretaries and other secretaries, deputy secretaries and assistant secretaries sparking protests.
Following the announcement of its 301-member full-fledged central committee at least two factional clashes were held between two groups leaving many injured.
