Carmichael College teachers, employees demand removal of principal

Teachers and employees of Government Carmichael College in Rangpur stage a demonstration Saturday morning demanding removal of college principal for alleged corruption and misuse of power.

Around 200 teachers and employees gathered in front of the administration building around 10:30am on the campus and staged a sit-in programme demanding withdrawal of the college principal professor Abdul Latif Miah.

The administrative building was put under lock and key and all classes and academic activities were suspended.

Later, a faction of general students expressed their solidarity with the protesting staff and teachers. They brought procession and formed human chain on the campus to press home their demand.

Carmichael College Teacher’s Staff Council secretary Akhtaruzaman Chowdhury, also an associate professor of management department, said that the principal was involved in unbridled corruption, misuse of power and resorted to nepotism in the college since joining in November, 2016.

‘He frequently misbehaves with teachers and officials for no reason at all. We will continue the sit-in and boycott classes until our demand is met,’ he added.

College vice-principal Abdur Razzak and associate professor Dilip Kumar Ray also addressed sit-in programme.

When contacted over cell phone, college principal Abdul Latif Miah said that teachers were first class government officers who could not go on work abstention. He also denied the allegations brought against him by the teachers.
