DMP urges students to return home

Desk Report |
Claiming that the demands of the protesting students are being met, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam on Thursday (2 August) urged them to return their homes.

“Already the implementation process of their demands has been started,” said Monirul, also the head of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, while briefing reporters at DMP media centre in the afternoon.

He also expressed deep shock on behalf of DMP to the families of the victim students who were killed in the Sunday’s road crash.

Expressing his condolence, Monirul said that North Division of Detective Branch (DB) is investigating the case filed in connection with the incident.

Already, an owner, two drivers and two helpers of the buses linked to Sunday’s tragic accident, have been arrested, said the police official.

There was a previous direction to traffic police against irregularities on the roads and highways, and they have been working accordingly, which he said has reduced mismanagement on the roads and highways.

Though the education institutions have been closed down for the day, the students came out on the roads, which created public sufferings, said the CTTC chief.

Monirul said that considering the security issues, the plying of the long-distance vehicles have been kept suspended.

He also urged the people not to get confused by rumours.

When his attention was drawn about police drivers operating without licenses, the CTTC chief claimed that all of the policemen, who are involved in driving police vehicles, have licenses.  He said only police and BRTA have the authority to examine driving license and as police usually check the license, many of the police drivers do not carry licenses.

Monirul said many police drivers have kept their licenses in the transport section of the police. “We are now considering to keep driving license with respective holder’s possession,” Monirul added.
