The Dhaka University Senate today unanimously nominated a three-member vice-chancellor panel including incumbent Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique to appoint new vice-chancellor of the university.
The two other panel members are incumbent treasurer Professor Kamal Uddin and Professor of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry Department Md Abdul Aziz.
The decision was taken at a special session of the university senate at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus with Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman Prof Siddique in the chair.
Prof Siddique called the special senate session in line with article 21(2) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973.
Some 55 senate members out of 105 cast their votes in the election to choose the three-member vice-chancellor panel. Later, the chancellor, also country’s president, will appoint one as the VC for four years.
The vacant seats of the senate include 25 from among the registered graduates, five representatives from DU Central Students’ Union, five representatives from research bodies, five principals of affiliated and constituent colleges and 10 teachers from those colleges.
The Appellate Division on Wednesday stayed the High Court order that earlier stayed the senate’s special session scheduled for July 29.
On Monday, the High Court stayed the DU senate’s session and asked the authorities to explain why convening the senate session for electing the VC panel before electing 50 senate members to fill up the vacancies would not be declared illegal.
Last VC panel election was held in August 2013 and the senate nominated then VC AAMS Arefin Siddique, pro-VC (education) Nasreen Ahmad and pro-VC (administration) Shahid Akhtar Hossain.
Later, the chancellor appointed Arefin as the VC for four years on August 25, 2013.
On January 17, 2009, Arefin assumed the office as the 27th VC on a temporary appointment and served a full tenure as an unelected VC.
