Five brothers get life for college student murder

The Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal has awarded life term rigorous imprisonment to five brothers in a college student murder case of Keshabpur in Jessore.

Judge of the tribunal MA Rab Hawlader delivered the verdict on Thursday (April 13) in presence of four convicts.

The court also fined the convicts Tk. 10,000 each, in default, one year more rigorous imprisonment.

The convicted five brothers are sons of late Joynal Dhabok of Kismat Shantola village under Keshabpur upazila in Jessore district. The brothers are– Mahir Uddin Dhabok, 45, Jahir Uddin Dhabok, 41, Kahir Uddin Dhabok, 35, Kabir Uddin Dhabok, 33, and Dabir Uddin Dhabok, 30.

College student Burhan Uddin Gazi alias Maruf, 18, son of Siddikur Rahman Gazi of the Kismat Shantola village succumbed to injuries on the way to Dhaka on December 12 in 2013.

According to special public prosecutor Enamul Haque, the convicted brothers had dispute over land-related issue with Shawkat Gazi, son of late Abdul Jabbar of the same village.

In sequence of the dispute, the brothers on December 11 in 2013 caught Shawkat Gazi’s son Raihan Uddin and beat on him keeping tied to a tree.

On information, Maruf went there to rescue Raihan. The convicted brothers attacked Maruf, leaving him severe injured.

Maruf was first admitted to the Khulna Medical College Hospital. Later, he was referred to Dhaka for further treatment. Following the day, he succumbed to injuries on his way to Dhaka.

Later, victim’s uncle Razab Ali Gazi filed a case with Keshabpur police station, accusing seven persons.

On April 1 in 2014, the investigation officer (IO) of the case Nasir Uddin submitted charge-sheet to a Jessore court against the five brothers.

Later on October 3 in 2016, the case was shifted to the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal following directive of the home ministry.
