'Gha' unit ‘question leak’: DU students threaten tougher movement

Desk Report |

Two days after the result of Dhaka University’s “Gha unit” admission test was published, Dhaka University students threatened to go for tougher movement if the authorities do not cancel the admission test results by today.

The "Gha" unit exam must be cancelled and fresh exam has to be held. The culprits involved with the question paper leak have to be identified and tried under the law, Rashed Khan, joint convener of the Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon, said.

The students under the banner of Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad brought out a protest rally demanding cancellation of "Gha" unit entry test amid widespread allegations of leakage of that unit's question paper.

They expressed solidarity with Akhtar Hossen who has been continuing his solitary hunger strike for the third straight day today demanding the same. Another joint convener of the platform Bin Yeamin Molla said, “Dhaka University is our pride. So, playing with the image of the university cannot be justified”.

They also demanded that the university authorities should visit Akhtar Hossen immediately to fulfill his demands and break his hunger strike.

The protesting students also claimed that the top hundred qualifiers in the "Gha" unit exam are those who failed in their respective unit's examinations. So, that is enough to proof the effects of the question leak, they said.

In order to save the image of the university, the exam must be cancelled and new exam should be held, Bin Yeamin Molla added.

Meanwhile, the university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League in a press release also demanded retaking of the exam and punishment of the people involved with the leaking of the question papers.

The DU authorities published the results of “Gha” unit entry test on Tuesday. Around 26 percent admission seekers have obtained pass marks in the test held last Friday, which is the highest pass rate in this unit in the last five years.

On the same day, the authorities admitted that the question paper of “Gha” Unit admission test was leaked via “digital forgery”, but they published the result anyway.

On Monday, hours after issuing a press release on publishing the results on Tuesday, the DU authorities issued another press release saying the result has been postponed as per directives of the VC over allegations of question paper leak.

Law enforcers have found evidence that hand-written question paper of “Gha” Unit admission test was leaked 43 minutes prior to the exam, and circulated by two admission information centres in Bogura.

Six people, including an admission seeker and his father, were arrested on Saturday in connection with the incident. The VC seemed unwilling to label it as “question leak”, and called it “digital forgery”.
