Human chain formed to protest student’s death

Staff Reporter |

A human chain was formed on Saturday (28 July) in front of Jatiya Press Club by Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implement Council (BDCLIC) and Socheton Nagarik Oikyo Parishad, to protest the suicide of a student, allegedly instigated by one of her school teachers.

The event was attended, among others, by BDCLIC president Aminul Islam, and Socheton Nagarik Oikyo Parishad president Enamul Haque, according to a press release.

The alleged victim, Sumaiya Akter Maliha, 14, was a student of the city’s Shahid Faruk Iqbal Girls High School, who committed suicide on Tuesday at her family residence in the city’s Gulbag area.

She left behind a suicide note, blaming her teacher, Amena Parveen Rimi, for seizing her exam papers without any valid cause, thus forcing her to commit suicide.

During the event, the organisers demanded punishment of the teacher and an abolishment of coaching centre culture, which might have played a role in the student’s death, according to the girl’s family.

They also protested against the inactive role played by the school’s governing body, which did not approach the girl’s family even after the suicide.
