Interesting teaching-learning materials check student drop-out: experts

Speakers at a function yesterday said interesting and interactive teaching-learning materials are very effective tool to check drop-out rate of students.

Poor teaching and learning materials hamper literacy skills of the early graders, they said at the inaugural function of an exhibition of teaching-learning materials at Directorate of Primary Education here.

To celebrate this year’s International Literacy Day, USAID’s Reading Enhancement for Advancing Development (READ) project, implemented by Save the Children in Bangladesh, organized the exhibition of teaching-learning materials.

Dr Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, directorate general of Directorate of Primary Education, inaugurated the exhibition while Mohammad Shahidul Islam, senior education advisor, Office of Population of Health, Nutrition, and Education (PHNE), USAID Bangladesh and Bushra Zulfiqar, director-education, Save the Children in Bangladesh were present on the occasion, among others.

Dr Abu Hena said the government has introduced ICT-based education incorporating easily understandable teaching-learning materials to improve quality of education.

Save the Children’s READ project has adopted this year’s International Literacy Day’s theme ‘Literacy in a digital world’ and organized special exhibition showcasing ICT and non-ICT teaching-learning materials.

This Literacy Day special exhibition contained Reading Hub approved by National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), 169 supplementary reading materials or story books for children, three interactive learning READ Android apps for the students of grade I-III.

READ project’s teaching-learning materials are being used in 5,112 primary schools.
