Students of Jagannath University on Thursday staged demonstration and besieged the office of the vice-chancellor to press home their demands for central students’ union election and others.

Their demands include formation of a special committee for Jagannath University Central Students Union elections within 4 months, allotment of female dormitory within two months, ensuring double bus trip within a month, providing better food quality in canteen at a cheaper rate, appointing 70 per cent teachers from the university students and starting the process of setting up the second JnU campus.

The students under the banner ‘General Students of Jagannath University’ brought out a procession on the campus at noon and besieged the VC office at 1:00pm and all administrative activities of the office remained stopped until the end of the siege at 3:00pm.

Hundreds of students of the University joined the programme. They issued a three-day ultimatum to meet their demands and threatened to begin indefinite hunger strike from July 9 if their demands were not met by the time.
 
Addressing the protesters, convener of the movement Raisul Islam Nayon said, ‘We submitted memoranda to the vice-chancellor several times. Every time he assured the students that he would take necessary steps to solve the problems, but we did not see any fruitful steps.’
