The literacy rate in Bangladesh has climbed to nearly 73 per cent, said Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman today (6 september).

Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Rahman said the current literacy rate in Bangladesh is 72.9 per cent, which has risen from last year’s rate of 72.3 per cent.

He was speaking at a press conference arranged for the occasion of International Literacy Day 2018, held at his ministry office at Bangladesh Secretariat.

Also on an additional note, the minister, in response to a query, said the government is thinking about introducing tuition-free schooling for children up to junior school level.

“Education up to class VIII should be mandatory and free for all. This issue has been forwarded to the cabinet for primary consideration,” he said.
