Admission tests for enrolling students in 35 government schools in the capital began on Thursday keeping 40 per cent seat reserved for the students of the respective catchment areas for the first time.

Lotteries for enrolment in Class I will be held on December 26.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher education divided 35 schools into three groups namely A, B and C. The first batch admission seekers under Group A schools for Class II through V took their written tests at 10:00am while applicants aspiring to enroll in class VI to VIII took their admission exams at 2:00pm.

Admission tests for Group B and C schools will consecutively be held on today and tomorrow.

A total of 75,700 aspiring students applied for 10,230 seats in those schools, said DSHE deputy director (secondary) AKM Mostfa Kamal who is also a member secretary to the admission committee of the government schools in the capital.

About 25,460 students took admission tests for group A schools against some 3,530 seats on Thursday. About 26,970 students will take admission tests against 3,100 seats today and 23,260 students will vie for 3,300 seats tomorrow, he said.

AKM Mostofa Kamal said students seeking admissions to Class II and III are required to face a 50-mark written test.

Admissions to Classes IV to VIII will be decided through 100-marked written tests.

Admission to Class IX will depend on the results of Junior School Certificate and Junior Dakhil Certificate exams, respectively.

Meanwhile, a group of guardians seeking their children’s admission to Motijheel Government Girls’ High School centre alleged that a quarter of teachers had been found aiding admission seekers by telling them correct answers in the exam hall.

Guardians said that these teachers had privately tutored many admission seekers ahead of the test.

School headmaster Tanjila Ashraf and DSHE deputy director AKM Mostfa Kamal, however, denied the allegations.
