Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the government will take legal actions against the private universities which have failed to fulfill the conditions of running their activities under the rules of the Private University Act-2010.

“Some of the private universities are yet to fulfill their conditions as per the act and they have to face legal actions after the stipulated timeframe,” he told the convocation of Central Women University (CWU) at the Krishibid Institute on Sunday (March 11), Bangladesh (KIB) here.

Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Abdul Mannan, Vice Chancellor of CWC Prof Dr Parvin Hasan and Chairman of CWC Trustee Board Kazi Zahedul Hasan, among others, addressed the convocation.

Distinguished fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Rawnak Jahan was the convocation speaker.

Nahid said the government has given importance to improving quality of education as well as ensuring universal access of all to education to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“You (students) are the future of the country. So, you have to be good citizens by acquiring knowledge to boost the development process for building a prosperous Bangladesh,” he added.

Nahid urged the authorities concerned to ensure congenial and good academic atmospheres at all educational institutions to make those free from all sorts of terrorist activities.

“Both public and private universities should be centre of excellence for practicing new knowledge…Without ensuring a good academic atmosphere, it is not possible to improve quality of tertiary education,” he said.

The minister said a remarkable progress has been made in the education sector as the government is working sincerely to expand education and improve its quality.

The government has expanded the opportunity of higher education across the country for all students, he said, adding, “Students are getting higher education easily as we have expanded the facilities up to the upazila level.”
