Police ‘accidiently’ shot Prof Shahedul, Probe body formed

Police on Thursday night ‘accidently’ shot a Dhaka education board official in front of hotel The Westin Dhaka.

Dhaka Education Board secretary, Professor Shahedul Khabir Chowdhury, was caught in line of the gunshot just after coming out of a meeting held at the city hotel, Gulshan Police Station officer-in-charge Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed journalists.

Khabir, also the secretary general of Bangladesh Civil Service General Education Association, was taken to United Hospital in Gulshan immediately, he said, adding that his injuries were not severe due to his distance from the shotgun.

It was an accident and the responsible constable, who was new at his duty, had already been suspended over the incident, Bakar said.

On Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police formed a three-member probe committee headed by its Gulshan division’s assistant commissioner.

Later in the afternoon, BCS General Education Association held an emergency meeting in this regard. The meeting was informed that Khabir’s injuries were not severe, according to a release issued by the association.

The association expressed concerns over the incident and demanded punishment of the responsible persons in this connection. The association is a platform teachers of government colleges and madrasahs across the country.
