GOPALGANJ UNIV STUDENT UNRESTProtests for VC’s removal continue for 11th day

Desk Report |

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University students continued their demonstration in Gopalganj on Saturday for the 11th straight day demanding removal of its vice-chancellor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin.

The demonstrators demanded resignation of the VC for his alleged involvement in corruption, misuse of power, autocratic behaviour, sexual abuse and other irregularities.

The university authorities on September 21 closed the university until October 3 but the protesters are continuing their agitations ignoring the closure notice.

Meanwhile, students of eight departments under engineering, science and life science faculties and agriculture institute alleged that they were deprived of lab facilities.

The civil engineering, botany, fisheries and marin bioscience, livestock and veterinary medicine and environmental and disaster management departments do not have any lab room yet.

Biochemistry and genetic engineering and biochemistry and molecular biology departments have no separate lab rooms while the students of these departments are being compelled to share a single lab room.

Besides the shortage of lab rooms, these departments are also facing the shortage of classrooms.

These departments continue their academic activities at the under construction building or tin-shed structures which are uncongenial for academic activities.

Civil Engineering department students alleged that they completed three semesters without any laboratory work and added that they had to complete the computer programming course C++, which could not be completed without lab, only by attending theoretical exam.

Fatema Khatun, chairman of the department, said that their labs were under construction and hopped these would be opened within 15 days.

The students of architecture department completed their 1st semester without any lab facilities while the department hasn’t any permanent teacher except its chairman.

Naim Ferdous, chairman of architecture department, said that lab was not necessary for architecture department but studio was necessary while they had already ordered some drawing tables for the studio.

Botany department under life science faculty has nothing but a classroom.

Rathindranath Bappi, president of Students’ Union of BSMRSTU unit, said, ‘Our university is introducing new departments every year, but they don’t ensure the necessary facilities. The students have become depressed day by day. We want a solution to these problems.’

Meanwhile the protesters celebrated prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s birthday on the day by cutting cake around 11:00pm and arranging a prayer ceremony around 4.00pm.

They said that as the prime minister always stood against corruption they hoped that she would remove the vice-chancellor soon.
