Without ensuring co-existence of student organisations in halls, no election to the university’s central students’ union or hall unions can be held in free and fair manner, observed the provosts of halls of residences of Rajshahi University on Thursday.

‘At present, there is no favourable environment in the halls. We have to create such an environment first, and only after then we will be able to go for the elections to the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union,’ said provost council convener Professor Sabina Sultana.

She came up with the remark while addressing a dialogue with RUCSU discussion committee, chaired by RU proctor Lutfor Rahman in his office on Thursday afternoon.

The university formed the committee to assess the possibility of holding elections to the university’s central student unions and hall unions.

During the first phase of discussion that began on February 8, the committee met the representatives of twenty-two political, social, and voluntary organisations.
Rokeya Hall provost Mobarra Siddiqua said that it was known to everyone that there was no situation of co-existence in the male student halls, and it could not be solved in a single day.

‘What we have told to mean favourable environment is about the co-existence. According to the RUCSU constitution, there would be a Parishad — Hall Chhatra Parishad — in every hall. But at present there is no co-existence in the halls. We do not want to take shame as Dhaka University takes,’ she added.
