Siddiqur returns home

Siddiqur Rahman, the college student whose eyes were damaged during a demonstration in the capital last month, today returned home this afternoon from India after his eye treatment there.

The flight carrying Siddiqur landed at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 3:20pm.

Talking to reporters, Siddiqur said, “My health condition is now better. I am grateful to the government for extending its support for my treatment.”

Siddiqur Rahman was sent to India for eye treatment on July 27. As per the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Health and Family Welfare Ministry arranged his treatment at Chennai’s Sankara Nethralaya Hospital. The government will bear the cost of his treatment.

According to physicians, left eye of Siddique was operated at Chennai’s Sankara Nethralaya Hospital. After his operation, Siddiqur is physically well, doctors said.

Siddiqur was accompanied by his brother Nawab Ali and Dr Zahidul Ahsan Menon, assistant professor of National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital.

Students from seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University brought out a demonstration at Shahbagh on July 20, demanding announcement of schedules of their examinations.

During the demonstration, Siddiqur received critical eye injury when a shell of teargas hit him.
