STEP project extended till 2019 to promote technical education

The government has taken a number of skilled-based programmes including Skills and Training Enhancement Programme (STEP) to promote technical education in the country.

“We have extended term of STEP project till 2019 as it has made a valuable contribution to expansion of the technical education. The STEP project is being implemented at a cost of Taka 1782 crore ,” Project Director of the STEP progamme ABM Azad told a seminar on Wednesday (14th March) in the conference room of Directorate of Technical Education here.

State Minister for Technical and Madrasah Education Division Kazi Keramat Ali, Director General of Directorate of Technical Education Ashok Kumar Biswas and officials of different organizations concerned, among others, addressed the seminar with Secretary of Technical and Madrasah Education Division Md Alamgir in the chair. Principals of 119 polytechnic institutions also attended the seminar.

Keramat said one technical school and one college will be set up in every upazila to increase the number of students in the rural areas.

As part of the efforts, the government has taken an initiative to set up 100 technical schools and colleges in the country to supplement the ongoing efforts of promoting technical education, he added.

“These 100 schools and colleges will be established as part of the government’s plan for setting up 389 technical schools and colleges across the country in phases, the state minister added.

He said the enrollment for technical education increased to 14.0 percent this year from only 1.0 percent in 2009.

While presenting a report, Ashok Kumar said a Women Technical School and College will be established in every division of the country. As many as 10,000 people would be imparted technical training to create skilled workforce in the country, he added.
