Students address diverse issues thru photographs

Students of different government and private universities have brought contemporary issues to the fore at a three-day inter-university photography exhibition under way at National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Students have depicted issues like students’ movement for road safety, nature, sufferings of homeless people and others. Titled, ‘Shutter Stories-3’, the show has been organised by UIU Photography Club for the third time.

The show features a total of 102 photographs by 54 students representing universities like Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, North South University, Independent University of Bangladesh, United International University, American International University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology and others.

The exhibition received a huge response. A three member jury panel consisting of photographers Mohammad Rakibul Hasan, Pronob Ghosh and Mohammad Panir Hossain selected the displayed photographs after evaluating 2,500 initial submissions.

The photographs have been displayed under five categories namely Portrait, Street and Lifestyle, Natural Landscape, Current affairs and Conceptual.

Mustasinur Rahaman, a student of KUET, has captured a photograph showing a man crossing railway tracks with an elderly woman amid heavy downpour. The photograph has been displayed under Street and Lifestyle category.

Ridhwan Chowdhury Adnan, a student of UIU, has captured a photograph portraying the recent students’ protests demanding safe roads. It has been displayed under Current Affairs category.

Ashraf Uddin Ahmed, a student of BRAC University, has captured an image of a bird sitting on a coconut tree which has been displayed under Nature and Landscape category.

Md Jahirul Islam, a student of CUET, has displayed a photograph showing a student climbing a pillar at a railway station to jump on the roof of a moving train.

‘This is the third time we have ogranised an inter-university exhibition to give a platform to students interested in photography. We have been organising the exhibition since 2016,’ said Jahid Hossain, president of UIU photography club.

An audience member, told  ‘I am impressed to see a galore of beautiful captures in the exhibition. I look forward to attending similar shows organised by UIU photography club in the future,’ Hossain Saddam.
