Suspended BCL female leader attempts suicide

Desk Report |

A female leader of the Awami League-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League, who failed to be on the newly announced central committee of the student body and was later suspended from the organisation, attempted to commit suicide on early Tuesday by taking sleeping pills.

Zarin Diya, former member of the BCL central committee, made the attempt hours after she was suspended from the BCL along with her four fellows on Monday evening for their alleged involvement in a factional clash at Madhu’s Canteen of Dhaka University on May 1.

A final year student of Applied Mathematics at the university and a resident student of Ruqayyah Hall, Zarin was taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital after her health condition deteriorated, said BCL’s former programme and planning affairs secretary Rakib Hossain.

Confirming the matter, Bachchu Mia, sub-inspector of the DMCH police outpost, said that Zarin was brought to the hospital at night in a sick condition due to taking sleeping pills.

Her stomach had been cleaned and she was released on Tuesday noon, he added.

Zarin earlier ventilated her frustration on Facebook over her suspension where she blamed BCL general secretary Golam Rabbani for her not being on the new central committee.

Regarding the suspension, Tanvir Hasan Shaikat, another deprived leader, said that the decision was a farce and Zarin might have attempted suicide out of frustration.

Golam Rabbani said that the disciplinary actions were taken as per the recommendations of the probe body.

At least 15 deprived activists of the BCL were injured in the attack allegedly perpetrated by men patronised by the student wing president Rezwanul Haque Choudhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani on May 13 as they rejected the new committee.

They came under a fresh attack allegedly by the general secretary Rabbani himself and his followers on Sunday.

The deprived group alleged that the new committee included many leaders with criminal records, non-students, drug abusers, drug dealers, married people and disputed individuals depriving devoted leaders and activists.

Prime minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina had instructed the leadership of the party’s student wing on May 15 to drop the controversial leaders from its recently announced central committee.
