Four of the deceased were identified as Saifur Rahman Pratik, 25, a masters’ student of SUST genetic engineering and biotechnology department, Khaleda Akter, 26, daughter of late Akhter Hossain of village Sharifganj of Golapganj upazila, Farhad Ahmad, 22, son of Talan Miah of Uttarpara of Golapganj, and Sundar Bibi, 40, wife of late Tazim Ullah of village Gadiarchar of Osmani Nagar upazila.

Identity of the other deceased, a woman aged around 50, could not be ascertained. Her body was recovered from Khadimnagar of Sylhet Sadar upazila, the police said Kotwali police officer-in-charge Sohel Miah said that they recovered Pratik’s body, which was hanging from the fan of his bedroom of a rented house in Kajalshah area in the city, in the afternoon.

‘We are assuming that Pratik has committed suicide,’ the OC said, adding that the body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

SUST proctor Zahir Uddin Ahmed told New Age that Pratik’s family was informed about the tragic incident. Pratik’s elder sister Shanta Islam, also a teacher of Dhaka University, in a facebook post in the evening blamed Pratik’s teachers for his death.

In her post she claimed that Pratik stood first in his honours exams and he wanted to be a teacher; but, his teachers intentionally gave low grades in the masters’ exams so that he would not be able to get appointment as a teacher of the department.

Golapganj police officer-in-charge AKM Fazlul Haq Shibli told New Age that they recovered Forhad’s body, which was hanging from a tree near his house at village Uttarpara, at about 9:00am.

The police recovered the throat-slit body of Khaleda, a mother of a 45-day-old baby girl, from a room of her parents’ house at Sharifganj at about 9:30am, the police officer said.

‘Reasons behind the deaths could not be identified,’ the police officer said, adding that the bodies were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

Osmani Nagar police officer-in-charge Shahidur Rahman told New Age that they recovered the throat-slit body of Sundar Bibi from the bathroom of her house at village Gadiarchar at about 10:30am.

‘The victim was suffering from mental disorder,’ the OC said, quoting the family. The body was sent to SOMCH for post-mortem examinations, he added.

The airport police officer-in-charge, Mosharraf Hossain, said that they recovered the body of an unidentified woman from a canal at Khadin Nagar of Sylet Sadar upazila in the afternoon and sent it to SOMCH for post-mortem examinations.
