The Gutter premiered at RU

Desk Report |

Rajshahi University-based theatre troupe Anushilon Natyadal premiered its new production titled ‘The Gutter’ on Rajshahi University campus on Tuesday. The troupe premiered the play marking its 40th founding anniversary at Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium of RU.

The Gutter, the 63rd production of the troupe, has been written and directed by RU management department professor Malay Kumar Bhowmick.

The play depicts how people driven by greed, power, money and religious extremism are negatively impacting the society. The play revolves around Buderam who hires two people to throw him into a gutter so that he can die drinking pure water. But, his wish is not fulfilled as he finds a lot of garbage and no water at the bottom. He starts begging people to rescue him.

Though two passersby hear Buderam’s pleas, they make no effort to rescue him. Instead, they start debating about by whom and why he was thrown into the gutter. Later an official from the concerned authorities comes to the gutter and formulates a plan to rescue Buderam but the rescue effort does not start due to some unexplainable reason.

A broadcast journalist comes to the location. He interviews the local people and concerned authorities and holds many talk shows on the issue but makes no other effort to rescue the trapped Buderam.

However, a desperate Buderam manages to climb out of the gutter himself after realising that no help is coming but is soon thrown back by a mob for having Ram, the name of Hindu deity, in his name.

Khairul Islam, Jillur Rahman Jewel, Shahadat Hossain Mimsin, Tanvir Arko, Raihan Uddin, Sabbir Ahmed Biswas, Banalota Sarkar, Limon Biswas, Shadhin Khan and Hridoy Shaha acted in the play.
