Two Shibir men killed in gunfight

Staff correspondent |

Two activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, were killed in a reported gunfight with police at village Tetulbaria in Jhenaidah sadar early Friday.

The deceased were identified as Shahid Al Mamun, and Anisur Rahman.

Jhenaidah additional superintendent of police Azbahar Ali Sheikh said police were tipped off that a gang of miscreants were being organized to create anarchy at Tetulbaria.

As they approached the spot, the miscreants opened fire on police van prompting them to retaliate that triggered a 20-minute gunfight.

At one stage, the miscreants retreated from the spot and police recovered two bullet-hit bodies from there.

They were sent to Jhenaidah General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.

Three police personnel — Jhenaidah sadar police sub-inspector Prabir Kumar, and constables Rabbi and Tarikul — were also injured during the gunfight, police claimed. They were admitted to the same hospital.

Police also recovered arms, ammunition and crude bombs from the spot.
