Comilla Univ closed after BCL leader’s death in clash

The authorities of Comilla University on Monday declared the institution closed for an indefinite period hours after an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League, was killed in infighting.

The authorities said the university was closed for indefinite period due to unrest situation and to avoid anarchy.

The decision was made at an emergency syndicate meeting chaired by the university vice-chancellor, Md Ali Ashraf, this morning, university sources said.

Male students were asked to leave their residential halls by 11:00am while the females by 2:00pm, they said.
Death of the Chhatra League activist of the university unit early today prompted the authorities to suspend all classes and examinations closing the university.
The deceased was Saifullah Khalid, a resident of Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, and a final-year student of marketing department.
Two groups of Chhatra League locked in a clash centring previous enmity at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall around 12:30am after the programme of lighting candles before the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding president.
The programme was held to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujib on the occasion of beginning the month of August, the month in which the country’s founding president was assassinated along with members of his family.
However, at least three Chhatra League activists including Khalid were bullet-wounded and several others got injured during the infighting.
Khalid was rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On-duty physicians of DMCH declared him dead around 5:15am, said sub-inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of the hospital police outpost.
Khalid was the son of Jaynal Abedin and a resident of Daudkandi in Comilla.
Police was conducting a raid at the halls of residence of the university around noon after they were vacated.
