10 Ruet students released after detention

RU Correspondent |

Police this morning released the 10 students who were detained during a raid at different dormitories of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) last night.

The students were taken to the police station as they failed to show their identity cards during the drive stated around 9:00pm following Thursday’s infighting between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), our Rajshahi University correspondent reports quoting police.

Police conducted the drive to arrest those involved in the clash and to recover firearms, Shahadat Hossain, OC Officer-in-charge of Matihar Police Station, told the correspondent.

Police released detainees after confirming their identities, the OC said.

At least seven Ruet students were injured as two BCL groups clashed at Shaheed Abdul Hamid Hall Thursday night.

Around 11:00pm, supporters of Ruet unit BCL President Nayeem Rahman Nibir and General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Topu were locked in the clash over establishing dominance on the campus, according to police.

Witnesses said over previous enmity, followers of President Nayeem, with iron rods and sharp weapons, attacked those of Secretary Mahfuzur, who were staying at Shaheed Abdul Hamid Hall. Later, men of Mahfuzur counter-attacked the rivals.
