A new campus of the Jagannath University (JnU) will be built in Keraniganj on the outskirt of the capital city to facilitate teachers and students a comfortable and standard atmosphere for higher education.

“The new campus will be an addition to the present infrastructure and other resources of the university, located at the old part of the capital city,” Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told a press conference at his secretariat today.

Referring to a decision taken today (Monday) at the cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, the education minister said the new campus has been planned to remove the long-standing infrastructural crisis of the university ensuring a long-term solution to various problems of the students and teachers there.

The minister said that the new campus would have academic building, library, laboratory, auditorium and vice-chancellor’s residence and dormitories for accommodating 30,000 students.

He said the government has already purchased 25 bighas of land in Keraniganj and the process of acquiring more land at the same area would start soon to construct the new buildings.

On Sunday, a 13-member delegation of Jagannath University Teachers Association met the education minister to discuss overall development issues of the university including construction of new halls.

During the discussion with the teachers’ delegation, Nahid said construction of a 17-storey hall for female students is underway near Bangla Bazaar Girls School. Ground floor of the hall has already been completed.

Earlier, students of the university staged demonstrations for many times demanding measures to solve their accommodation crisis.
