35 injured over trifling matter of stalking a schoolgirl

Nearly 35 people got injured in a clash between two groups of people over stalking a schoolgirl in Sadar upazila of Habiganj district on Friday night.

Locals said Faisal Ahmed, son of Afil Uddin of Jatraborobari village, was stalking a schoolgirl at a marriage ceremony at Alapur village at around 9:00pm.

An altercation took place between the youths of Alapur and Jatraborobari villages over the issue. At one stage, people of the two villages locked in a clash, leaving at least 35 people from both sides injured.

Several shops and vehicles were also vandalised during the clash that continued for an hour. On information, police rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse the clashing groups.

Of the injured, 15 were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital while the rest to the local health complex. Two of them were later shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.

None was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
