Authorities of Rajuk Uttara Model College has imposed a ban on the use of facebook by its higher secondary students for six months citing the grounds that the access to the most popular social media divert their attention from study.
At a guardian-teacher meeting held on Saturday (August 5), the college’s vice-principal Naznin Begum also asked the parents to remove computer, smart phone and ipod from the students’ possessions and to stop internet services so that the students could not access facebook.
She said, ‘The students must be kept away from accessing such technologies for the next six months if we want better performance in the examinations.’
The college authority took the decision in the wake of poor performance in the Higher Secondary Certificate exam held this year, said a number of parents who attended the meeting.
The HSC result which was published on July 23 also showed that seven students out of 1,370 candidates failed in the exam and the average scores by them were much lower than the scores earned in the previous exams by its students. The overall result of the college was not satisfactory compared to the other similar standard institutions in this year.
‘The authorities took the decision to ensure a hundred per cent pass and better average scores in the next HSC exam to be held in 2018 and onward,’ said Tofayel Ahmed, a Rajuk student’s guardian.
Rasheda K Choudhury, executive director of Campaign for Popular Education, criticised the decision of Rajuk college authority and said that ‘you will not get the benefit of open air if you keep the windows closed fearing dust carried by air.
Md Sohrab Hossain, the ex-officio chairman of Rajuk college governing body and secretary of the secondary and higher education division, said that it was an internal matter of the college’s administration and he was not aware of the decision.
‘It seems the decision has been taken for some academic purposes and it would benefit the students,’ he added.
In March this year, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission recommended for restrict use of facebook by the students until they are 18 years old.
The BTRC also suggested to maintain internet password secret within the adult members of a family.
