Doubts have been cast over the first post-mortem report of murdered Comilla college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu that cited no evidence of rape.
Cultural organisation Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi staged a human-chain and a protest rally at the city’s Kandirparh on Tuesday, where the speakers questioned the report’s credibility.
Based on the findings at the crime scene, police were the first to suspect that the 19-year old Victoria Government College student was raped before she was killed on the night of Mar 20.
On Mar 22, Comilla’s Additional Superintendant of Police Abdullah Al Mamun had told reporters that on seeing the body, they were suspecting that she had been raped and tortured before the murder.
Forensic doctors of Comilla Medical College Hospital released the first autopsy report on Monday, 15 days after the killing of Tonu, who was also a theatre activist.
Udichi’s Comilla unit President Mrinal Kanti Dhali on Tuesday said, “A vested quarter’s pressure has made the inquest and the autopsy report questionable.”
He added that proper investigation, arrest of the killers and justice for Tonu were essential to protect the country’s culture.
Victoria Government College students also joined Tuesday’s demonstrations and vented their frustration over the autopsy report.
However, a second autopsy has been performed on Tonu’s body that was exhumed recently following a court order. The findings have not been released.
Ali Akbar Masum, general secretary of the Comilla unit of Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujon), alleged the first autopsy report claiming no proof of rape must have been made public with an ill motive.
“Tonu murder case involves the big question of justice and public security. It must not be covered up,” he said, adding that the government should take action for proper investigation so that justice can be delivered.
The CID are now investigating the case that Tonu’s father started last month after after local police and the Detective Branch probed it for sometime.
None has been identified or arrested so far.
