The pro-Awami League teachers and senators at Jahangirnagar University held a human chain in front of the administrative building on Monday (12 Feb), demanding an immediate end to ragging on the campus.

The protesting teachers, led by former university vice-chancellor Sharif Enamul Kabir, also handed over a memorandum to the current vice-chancellor around 11:00am and gave a 48-hour ultimatum to bring the culprits under trial responsible for the ragging under trial.

Jahangirnagar University unit of Chhatra Front, a left-leaning student organisation, also brought out a procession on the campus around 12:00pm to protest at the ragging of junior students by the seniors.

They urged the university authorities to take immediate measures to stop ragging and harassment on the campus.

On the other hand, around 100 teachers under the banner ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’ observed a sit-in for one hour in front of the administrative building in the morning, demanding immediate election to the vice-chancellor panel of Jahangirnagar University.

Speakers at the programme urged university authorities to take initiative to hold the VC panel election at the earliest possible time, given the tenure of the current vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam will end on March 2.

Leader of the Awami League backed university teachers’ faction, former Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor Professor Sharif Enamul Kabir said, ‘We cherish and practice democratic values at Jahangirnagar University. So, the current vice-chancellor will have to hold the election to the VC panel to continue that democratic trend.’

Dean of physical and mathematical science faculty AK Majumder, newly elected senate member Alamgir Kabir, associate professors Sayidur Rahman and Jebunnesa, among others, were also present at the programme.
