Desk Report |

A case has been filed against Assistant Professor Maidul Islam of Chittagong University (CU) on charge of his alleged derogatory remarks about the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media platform Facebook.

University’s History Department student Md Iftekhar Uddin Ayaz filed the case with Hathazari Police Station under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act on Monday night, said Officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station Belal Uddin Jahangir.

Earlier on July 15, Sociology Department teacher Maidul Islam was forced to leave the campus along with his family after getting continuous threat from Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists over his Facebook remarks in support of quota reform movement.

The BCL men also declared Maidul Islam and another CU teacher as persona non grata on the campus.

Meanwhile, a group of university teachers and employees under the banner of Bangabandhu Parishad formed a human-chain on the campus around 12 noon demanding punishment of the teacher and submitted memorandum to the Vice Chancellor against him.

In the human-chain, speakers said no one will be spared for making derogatory comments over Bangladesh, Liberation War, Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina.
